Resumen de CV

El Dr. Manes se graduó de médico en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), Argentina, de Magister en Filosofía y Doctor en Ciencias en la Universidad de Cambridge, Inglaterra. Como estudiante de medicina recibió el premio “Neurociencias 1992” otorgado por la Asociación Médica Argentina por su trabajo de investigación: “El rol del cuerpo calloso en la transferencia inter-hemisférica cerebral”. Fue también docente de anatomía en las facultades de Medicina y Farmacia y Bioquímica de la UBA.

Realizó la residencia de neurología en FLENI. Luego emprendió su formación en el exterior con un firme compromiso de volver a la Argentina para desarrollar recursos locales a fin de mejorar los estándares clínicos y de investigación en neurociencias cognitivas,,neurología cognitiva y neuropsiquiatría. Se capacitó en Neuroimágenes Funcionales en el Departamento de Neurorradiologia del Massachussets General Hospital (Boston, USA) y realizó el fellowship de neuropsiquiatría en el departamento de Psiquiatría de la Universidad de Iowa (Iowa City, USA), donde también fue docente de neuroanatomía en la cátedra de anatomía. Trabajó como neurólogo e investigador clínico en los departamentos de neurología y psiquiatría de la Universidad de Cambridge y en la Unidad de Neurociencias Cognitivas del Medical Research Council, Cambridge, Inglaterra.

En el año 2001 volvió a la Argentina y logró su objetivo de establecer el Departamento de Neurología Cognitiva y Neurociencias Cognitivas Humanas con un equipo multidisciplinario en FLENI, donde se desempeñó como jefe de la sección Neurología Cognitiva, Neuropsicología y Neuropsiquiatría. Fue también profesor de Neurociencias Cognitivas de la Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA).

El Dr. Manes luego creó y desarrolló el Instituto de Neurología Cognitiva (INECO) y el Instituto de Neurociencias de la Fundación Favaloro. Ambas son consideradas hoy en día instituciones de vanguardia que lideran el campo de las neurociencias en América Latina, convirtiéndose en centros de referencia internacional para la investigación en neurociencias cognitivas.

Facundo Manes ha publicado más de 190 trabajos científicos originales en prestigiosas revistas extranjeras de su especialidad, tales como Brain, JAMA Neurology y Nature Neuroscience y varios capítulos en libros internacionales sobre neurología y psiquiatría como el “Kaplan & Sadock’s Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry” (Williams & Wilkins), “Behavior and Mood Disorders in Focal Brain Lesions” (Cambridge University Press) y “Neuropsychology of Emotion” (Oxford University Press), entre otros. El Dr. Manes ha escrito también cuatro libros: 1) “Convivir con personas con Alzheimer u otras Demencias” 2) “Tratado de Neuropsicología” (Editorial Akadia), 3) “Social Neuroscience of Psychiatric Disorders” (Neurociencia social de los desórdenes psiquiátricos), 4) “Usar el Cerebro. Conocer nuestra mente para vivir mejor”.

El Dr. Manes es permanentemente invitado a dar conferencias en distintas partes del mundo y ha participado en prestigiosos foros científicos internacionales como la “Royal Society of Medicine” (Londres) y la “New York Academy of Sciences”, entre otros. Fue consultor en Salud y educación de la “Fundación Dana” en Nueva York. Es editor asociado de los journals Frontiers in Dementia, Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, y Frontiers in Neuroscience for Young Minds (Nature Publishing Company).  Ademas es “International Advisory Committee Member” de la Frontotemporal Dementia Association.

Ha sido galardonado con importantes premios nacionales e internacionales, entre los cuales se encuentran el otorgado por el Programa Formación de recursos de Alto Nivel del Ministerio de Cultura y Educación de la Nación, el de Joven Investigador 1999 otorgado por la Asociación de Neuropsiquiatría Americana y el premio Arturo Jauretche 2014 por contribuir al pensamiento nacional. Es miembro de varias sociedades científicas nacionales e internacionales. Así también, sirvió como miembro internacional del comité de expertos de la International Neuropsychiatric Association. Fue designado miembro de la ICD-11 Expert Working Group on the Classification of Neurocognitive Disorders de la World Health Organization. El Dr. Manes es autor de los nuevos criterios diagnósticos de la variante conductual de la demencia frontotemporal así como de la nueva clasificación de la afasia primaria progresiva y sus variantes, propuestos por grupos de trabajo internacionales. En la actualidad se desempeña como investigador principal o co-investigador en múltiples ensayos clínicos que evalúan potenciales tratamientos para la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Es miembro del Comité Asesor Internacional de la Asociación de Demencia Frontotemporal.

Entre sus contribuciones más importantes, el Dr. Manes identificó las áreas prefrontales relacionadas con el proceso de toma de decisiones en humanos, los mecanismos neurales de la agresión, en conjunto con el Dr Calder, y el rol de la ínsula en los procesos cognitivos y emocionales. Con el profesor Hodges y el profesor Zeman caracterizó  un nuevo síndrome denominado Amnesia Epiléptica Transitoria. Además, junto con el Dr Bekinschtein, describió, por primera vez, el procesamiento emocional de pacientes con deterioro de conciencia mínima y, junto con el Dr Jeffrey Max, las áreas cerebrales involucradas en el desarrollo de los síntomas del déficit de atención e hiperactividad (ADHD). Recientemente con la Lic Torralva desarrollo de una batería neuropsicológica para detectar en forma temprana la demencia frontotemporal y con el Dr Ibáñez ha propuesto una teoría sobre el rol del contexto en los trastornos neuropsiquiátricos. Ha co-desarrollado una de las primeras unidades de rehabilitación cognitiva holística en América Latina. Su área actual de investigación es la neurobiología de los procesos mentales, particularmente los mecanismos neurales involucrados en la toma de decisiones y la conducta social. Su equipo ha trabajado intensamente en el desarrollo de baterías cognitivas y tests de screening destinados a facilitar el diagnóstico temprano de las demencias.

Facundo Manes cree en la importancia de la divulgación científica en la sociedad. Condujo el programa “Los Enigmas del Cerebro” en la televisión argentina, escribió gran cantidad de artículos de divulgación científica en la prensa y es columnista sobre temas de ciencia y sociedad en los principales diarios Argentinos. Escribió el best seller en America Latina y España “Usar el cerebro. Conocer nuestra mente para vivir mejor”. Es rector de la Universidad Favaloro y profesor de Neurología de la Conducta, Neurología y Neurociencias Cognitivas de dicha Universidad y es el presidente de la World Federation of Neurology Research Group for Aphasia, Dementia and Cognitive Disorders.

Es también profesor de Psicología Experimental en la University of South Carolina, USA, Visiting Professor en la Macquarie University  (Sydney, Australia), Visiting Professor en el Department of Neurology de la University of California San Francisco (UCSF) y Consultor en Neuroimágenes y Neuropsicología en el Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit del Medical Research Council en Cambridge, Inglaterra. Actualmente supervisa la investigación de estudiantes de doctorado y postdoctorales, en diferentes proyectos de investigación. Ha creado en Argentina un laboratorio multidisciplinario para el estudio de los procesos cognitivos y conductuales humanos de referencia internacional. El Dr Manes es miembro of the Center for Cognitive & Social neuroscience global network e investigador del Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders. Es tambien director del Núcleo Universidad Diego Portales-Fundación INECO para las neurociencias en Chile e Investigador Principal del CONICET. Es además presidente de la Fundación INECO, organización sin fines de lucro, cuya misión es apoyar programas de investigación y difusión sobre prevención, detección y tratamiento de los trastornos neurológicos y psiquiátricos. Estas múltiples experiencias y responsabilidades de Facundo Manes están basadas en su firme convicción de que la riqueza de un país se mide por el valor del capital humano, la educación, la ciencia y la tecnología, y que allí está la clave del desarrollo social.
